"If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking." ~ Haruki Murakami
This quote from Norwegian Wood is said by a character who only reads books whose authors have been dead for at least 30 years.
But I have a different interpretation of this quote.
It comes from going on Twitter and seeing endless threads on "The X best books you MUST read before you turn Y".
Invariably, the same crop of books appear over and over again (for various reasons). That's not necessarily bad. But like Murakami says, you're not going to think any differently from anyone else reading these books.
That's why you should explore and seek out good literature that goes against your main interests and what others recommend.
If you read a good book that isn't frequently recommended, you'll think a little more uniquely, which, in my opinion, leads to a much richer life.
You know what's cool about this principle of exploring?
It applies to more than books.

It's OK to follow the torchlight of others, but make time in your life to explore - whether it be books, music, art, your city, etc.
Find something good, unique, and colourful to add to your personal tapestry.
