Do your book highlights disappear into your mind's void?

Follow these 3 steps to remember more.

Recap

Simplicity = the root of knowledge.

While reading, highlight and write 1 sentence summaries for each chapter.

Then, summarize the book using my 3-2-1 framework:

  • 3 main ideas

  • 2 quotes

  • 1 action item

Relate

The brain has lots of synapses, which are like tiny bridges connecting neurons in your mental landscape. Encoding specificity means that when ideas are more detailed and have more synaptic connections to other ideas, they're stronger.

So connect the book ideas to your own experiences, other books / content you've consumed, etc.

For example, if you're reading a book on productivity, relate it to your own work habits or that time management app you tried last month.

Remix

This one is more effort, but that's good because of desirable difficulty. When learning is more challenging, it engages your brain more deeply, leading to better retention and understanding.

Explain the ideas using analogies, visuals, or write in public :)

Bonus tip: Try multimodal learning by combining different methods like writing, drawing, or discussing the concepts with others. This engages multiple senses and reinforces your understanding from different angles.
