I've been testing since 2002.
Here's one line about something important I learned or experienced that year:
- How to install sound card and graphics card drivers onto a windows pc.
- I have no idea what testing is.
- Being a games tester may not be a great long-term career move.
- If your current employer doesn't recognise the skills, somebody else in the market will.
- Having a well paid job where you do nothing isn't the winning move you think it is.
- Companies that look successful from the outside are often winging it on the inside.
- When your CTO tells you not to splurge this Christmas, he's doing you a solid.
- Cliques suck.
- Show your work and get things in writing.
- The testing industry is HUGE and isn't homogenous.
- Working at large companies and having their name on your CV opens doors.
- Working at SMEs, getting your hands dirty with allTheThings and getting experience opens doors.
- Don't leave your current job without a contract and firm start date from the next one.
- Working with friends is the best.
- Networking isn't just for CCNA exams.
- The opportunity to do excellent testing in regulated environments is HUGE but be prepared to overcome a lot of fear.
- Give yourself credit when you've done a good job.
- Don't give everything to work because you won't have much left over for yourself.
- No seriously. Working with friends is THE best.
- Sometimes you get an offer so good, it's irresponsible to turn it down.
- You have more people rooting for you than you think, so don't keep your troubles to yourself.
- Don't allow yourself to get derailed because you don't have time to waste.
- TBD :)
What lessons have you learned over the years?
