Nose-picking is a bad habit, but watching pornography is an addiction.

If you struggle with pornography, here's why seeing it as an addiction is helpful:

you will have more grace with yourself when you feel like it's hard to stop it;
you will take it more seriously because a decision to stop will not be enough;
you will be able to forgive yourself because addiction hijacks the brain in a way and leads you to actions you don't want to do.

Being hard on yourself is not going to help you overcome. It will make your life worse and slow down the process toward freedom.

Here are the reasons why pornography is an addiction, not a bad habit.

Reason #1: A bad habit is relatively easy to control while an addiction gives you an irresistible urge to act upon it.

If you decide to stop picking your nose and you catch yourself doing it, you stop. You don't follow through. The underlying drive is not strong.

It's very different from addiction. You always have reasons to avoid it, but the desire to fall for it is too strong.

Reason #2: A bad doesn't impact someone's life negatively as much as addiction.

If you pick your nose, your relationship with God, your relationship with your wife or your confidence doesn't get damaged. On the other hand, addiction takes over your life and emotional state. You know it's bad, you see the destruction and yet you can't stop doing it.

Reason #3: Stopping a bad habit doesn't change one's life as much as stopping an addiction.

If you stop picking your nose, you might avoid an infection in the nasal tract. Not much else. It's not something that once you stop is going to significantly improve your life.

Quitting addiction, however, can save your life, health and relationships. It's like you're given a new life, a second chance. The freedom from addiction feels great!

All said, there's no need to panic after realizing you have an addiction, not a bad habit. It's actually time to take a deep breath and be grateful. You used to treat a problem with the wrong medicine. You didn't see results because you treated a bad habit while all along it was an addiction.

Now everything can change, so take heart!

Give yourself grace and be patient!
