Dr. Amishi Jha is an expert in neuroscience and mindfulness.
She is a professor at the University of Miami (FL) and studies how mindfulness strengthens and protects attention. Her studies have proven to help military members, elite athletes, corporate workers, and educators improve their focus. She has shared this work with organizations such as NATO, The Pentagon, and Parliament.
Here are three types of attention and how to train them
1.) Flashlight- Flashlight attention is fixing your attention on one area. You train flashlight attention by choosing something to focus on for a specific time and refocusing on that area as needed.
2.) Floodlight- Floodlight attention zooms attention out. Instead of focusing on what someone's saying, you could focus on their whole body and mannerisms. You can train floodlight attention by focusing on larger areas.
3.) The Juggler- The juggler skillfully shifts your focus from one point to the next without losing the strain of events. For example, you can converse with multiple people and easily switch topics. That is a great way to practice juggling attention.
