I'm a Catholic wife and grandmother exploring small-town life in the Ozark mountains through the lens of its everyday people, music, and customs.

The 1970s Burger King Jingle Sent the Message to Kids to Reject Limits

Recognizing the Harm of This Marketing Message

  • "Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, Special orders don't upset us, All we ask is that you let us serve it your way.

Compare that 1970s Burger King jingle to what I was being told at home: "You have to eat the boiled squash before you can leave the table."

My sensitivities were not coddled by my mom. But still, the TV commercials had more influence on me than I like to admit. I didn't recognize it until years later when I converted to Catholicism.

The Burger King "Have it your way" message I had absorbed as a kid clashed strongly with the Church's instruction to deny myself.
