Hey Reader.
I imagine you already know what you like and what you don't when you read. Maybe you haven't articulated all of it, but you know pretty fast when to stop or move on(hopefully this isn't one of those times).
So, how do you translate that knowledge into your writing? How do you make sure that your writing creates the impact you so enjoy?
Create an experience, check your agendas
In my last essay, I demonstrated the idea of connecting with your reader by consciously considering their experience and catering to it. I didn't explain anything, I showed it. I created an experience by treating the essay as a ride that has the reader is going on.
More than anything, my agenda was that the reader keep reading. And that they will do that by having fun. I put the experience of the reader as the top priority of the piece
. Because I knew that it is experience, not information, that creates transformation and moves people. It definitely does for me.
Reading takes effort
Reading is taxing. Especially non-fiction reading. It requires us to understand, consider and integrate ideas into our understanding and belief system. that takes mental energy. If we keep dishing out dry information(as clear as it might be), our readers will get off the ride.
Create for the reader the experience that you would like to have. You are your first reader anyway.
Sincerely, me
I am currently reading what I am writing and choosing each word and phrase for me to like, because I want you to like it.
I don't want everyone to like it. I want YOU to like it. The person I am writing it for. It's not a single person, this isn't exactly a personal letter. But like a letter, the person I am writing this for will get unique value out of this.
Don't forget that personal letters are vulnerable.
In conclusion
Care for your readers. Make it a worthwhile experience to read you. You are the only one that can give them your unique experience. You do that by letting them in to your brain AND into your heart.
