My first full-length Symphony for large orchestra got lost in a hard drive crash in 2008, with about six years of other compositions. I called that Symphony ‘The City’, because it was describing a city that was awaking, the hectic workdays, and the sweet calm sunsets in the evening. The length was 26 minutes. It took me more than two and a half year to finish, so it’s still hurtful o think about it.
My Second Symphony Cinemagica.
As the symphony is still in the works I don’t have every moment presented here yet. My hope it will be between 25-35 minutes long when it’s completed.
Movement One
Cinemagica 4:35
It’s written to vividly depict the arrival of a formidable storm, capturing the intense and dynamic interplay between the elements as they build in strength and fury. The music intricately weaves the sounds of the tempest with a serene interlude, embodying the calm that briefly settles amid the tumultuous crashing of powerful waves. This piece is characterized by a rich array of percussion, underpinning the entire movement with a rhythmic intensity that mirrors the storm’s relentless force.
Movement Two
Susurration 5:45
The meaning of the word is: Whispering or Rustling.
It opens with strings plating tremolos over a bowed Gong and leading into a moveable part where woodwind is the foreground. Then the strings imitate the woodwind, leading to a kind of fanfare in brass and percussion that is commented by saxophones. That repeats now with added brass, and leading to a crescendo and the fanfare, finally a repeat of the beginning.
In progress, not finished yet.
Movement three
あなたは美しいです (Anata wa utsukushīdesu) You are beautiful!
Right now, it seems like the movement could be 7-10 minutes long.
Movement Four
Finale (not sure what name it will be given yet.)
I’m letting the composition grow at its own pace, not trying to stress it.
