Day 29 - Composing A Viola Concerto
Andy Sporring

My dream when returning to composing in 2022 was to compose a Viola Concerto. And now it’s here! I give you:

In Nomine Concerto For Viola And Large Orchestra

Premiered on streaming on the 10th of August 2025

The concerto has three movements, based on the Latin phrase “in nomine patris et filii et spiritus sancti!” which is used in various contexts in the Christian mass. Translated to English, it's “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."

First Movement - In Nomine Patri

I start the concerto with the Viola playing in its deepest and richest register accompanied by harp and piano. This leads to a crescendo accompanied by strings and leading to the second theme in the highest register accompanied by harp and strings.  After a repeat of the first theme in another key, it leads up to a rhapsodic cadenza that, after some modulating sequences, leads back to the beginning and ends with the viola playing flageolet.

Second Movement - Et Filii

It’s a playful scherzo depicting a child playing, leading to a slower part with canon-like parts in solo Viola and strings. Almost angelic in it’s feeling. Adding a harp to the texture, it becomes like a prayer. Leading back to the Viola increasing speed and returning to the playful theme. The concerto ends with a tutti with full orchestra that ends abruptly and just a pizzicato of the lose string C on the viola.

Third Movement - Et Spiritus Sancti

This movement opens with viola and harp playing flageolets. It gives the movements it’s tone of something spiritual and holy. Further on in the movement, I let the viola play against parts of chorals, hinting a gratitude to Alban Berg and his violin concerto.

For me, the composer, this concerto is a prayer as well as a profound testament of my Christian faith.
