How do you know when you've found the career you are perfectly suited for?

Here are 5 signals that indicate you have arrived at your ideal career:

1. You Are No Longer Searching for a Better Opportunity

The best indicator that you have not yet arrived is when you are still looking for better opportunities.

Searching involves looking outside your current stories and roles. Fantasizing about a different industry, different customers, and different responsibilities.

The first signal that you have found your ideal career is that you are no longer interested in looking for other opportunities.

2. You are Ready to Dig Deeper Roots into Current Roles

The desire to dig deeper roots into your current professional roles is the opposite of looking for better opportunities.

Digging roots means taking pride in how you meet your current responsibilities, carrying your responsibilities to the edge of your abilities, and seeking out new responsibilities that you can add to your responsibility stack.

Purpose alignment always means digging deeper roots.

3. You are Committed to Chasing the Visions of Your Current Stories

Our careers unfold within the companies we work to build.

Every institution has a vision for the future it is working to create. Alignment between your own goals and the future that your company exists to build is the very foundation of purpose-driven work.

The third indicator that you have found your ideal career is when you are one hundred percent committed to chasing the vision of your current company.

4. You Are Serving the Right People in the Right Ways

Your career is made of the people you serve and the ways you serve them.

If you have yet to find the work you are built to do, you either aren't serving the right people or you aren't serving the right people in the right ways.

•You can love how you serve people but dislike the people you serve, and you will be miserable.

•You can love the people you serve but hate what you do every day to serve them, and you will be miserable.

The fourth indicator that you are living your purpose-driven career is when you are serving the right people in the right ways.

5. You Know in Your Heart that You are Doing the Work Only You Can Do

Don't overcomplicate purpose.

You know it when you see it. You know it when you feel it.

If you are unhappy in your job,

if you are searching for a better opportunity,

if you aren't interested in digging deeper roots,

if you aren't passionate about the vision of your organization,

and if you aren't serving the right people in the right ways,

then you haven't yet found it.

And that's okay! You and everyone else.

But there is hope.

It is possible.

You just have to keep going.
