Trusted thinking partner to global tech leaders. Make a list of the boldest futures you dare to dream. Create a life you love. I write about leadership.

Working on being more [insert desired outcome]? SPECIFICITY is key!

Want to have more CONFIDENCE?

Awesome. Grab a pencil and paper, and let's both draw...

Day to day I share powerful conversations with amazing humans who are engaged in creating something better for themselves and their people.

You want more confidence? Cool! Say more.

Create a list of 50 SPECIFIC situations where you want to experience more of that thing. Go on. Aim at 50.

🔎 in 1:1s with my direct reports

🔎 in 1:1s with my manager

🔎 on voice calls with my client

🔎 with my first team peers giving a status report

Your experience in each context is unique to that system.

Confidence to...

♥️ ask more burning questions, instead of biting my tongue

♥️ put my hand up and ask a question at the next all-hands

♥️ give direct feedback (helpful information) to my direct reports

♥️ challenge the status quo

♥️ stop using necessary filler words and discounting my own points

♥️ simply ask a question and sit in silence, not being the first one to cave in

Each context generates a nuanced different feeling. The single label sort of works, but also obfuscates what's happening that is unique in this setting.

Confidence to...

♥️ state my preference of lunch venue, rather than default to people pleasing and asking in reply what they would prefer

♥️ sit in a different chair at the team meeting

confidence to let go of the facilitation of this meeting and rotate that job

♥️ delegate tasks more

The uncomfortable truth is simply you cannot magic confidence overnight in every place that you want it. That's a low-quality expectation to hold.

Baby steps.

One place you can experiment and succeed with. Control for as many factors as possible and experiment in just one setting. A place to play.

How do you build [the thing you want more of]?

A little piece at a time.

One experiment at a time.

1 learning, 1 discovery at a time.

Who are you being?

You are being focussed, purpose-driven, disciplined, consistent, organised, thorough, vulnerable, growth-oriented, unapologetic...

When you want to help someone create something more, don't accept the simplicity of the words being used. Get curious. Unpack it. Go deeper.

Get specific!
