My life's work is to activate and galvanize leaders. My philosophy is summed up in 3 words. FUN. GROW. WIN. Over the next 30 days, I'll be writing 30 Atomic Essays.
What is the difference between a thermometer and a thermostat?
A thermometer REFLECTS the temperature.
A thermostat SETS the temperature.
Leaders are thermostats. They set the temperature of a room, conversation, or culture, not by their title but by their influence.
Reflecting requires much less energy than influencing. The bigger the gap between the current temperature and the thermostat, the more energy it will require to shift.
You are the solution to whatever obstacle your team is facing. Use your influence wisely. Your positive attitude, intentional words, and decisive action can set the tone for whatever room, conversation, or culture you find yourself in. Own it.
Some conversations are too cold; some are too heated. Both could benefit from a thermostat.
Here is my challenge for you.
When you find yourself in a conversation that is too cold, try warming it up, smile, speak life, encourage someone, and share vulnerably, be the thermostat.
When you find yourself in a conversation that is too heated, try cooling it down, listen to understand, help identify feelings and needs, and if necessary, take a short break and be the thermostat.
Test it out. Take a risk. Influence the environment. Be the thermostat.
Tag a leader below who you have seen "being the thermostat".
