Are your Assessments Authentic? Rate them with these 4 Dimensions
Nancy Nelson

Do your assessments qualify as authentic?

If your course is anything like those included in a recent program-wide study from University of Guelph, it depends on the year of study and the size of the class (Hobbins et al, 2022). Assessments in 4th year or smaller classes were more authentic than those in 1st year or larger classes. What's more important is how they measured authenticity. Each of 4 dimensions was ranked on a scale of 1 (low) to 3 (high):

Realism – Tasks are real-world problems or questions.

Cognitive Challenge - Students apply knowledge in new ways.

Evaluative Judgment Criteria – Students judge their own performance, based on specific criteria.

Feedback – Students get timely and meaningful feedback from the prof.

Take a look at your latest assessment. Does it get a low, moderate or high authenticity ranking? What could you tweak to make it more authentic?
