How much work are you actually assigning your students?

Most of us don’t really have a sense of how long it take our students to do the work we assign. Is it 1-2 hrs per week? 3-5 or even more? It may be that their cumulative workload is what causing them to offload their work to genAI.

To help our students be more successful we need to have a better sense of the workload we're asking of them. Consider the time requires for these 4 main tasks:

1. pre-work (reading, watching videos, etc.)

2. writing (reports, projects, essays, data collection, etc.)

3. doing homework assignments

4. studying

If the average for each week is more than the scheduled hours for your course, you may just be nudging them to offload.
