Essential eCommerce email sequences (part 0 of 10)
Kat Garcia | @heykatgarcia

This is a how-to series covering the top 10 email sequences* every e-commerce business should have.

I'll create a how-to guide each day, and will update this post with links.

(In Klaviyo, my eCommerce email platform of choice, sequences are called "flows." I use these two terms interchangeably.)

But first, why sequences? Because $$$

Seriously, why build sequences when you can just send promotional emails/newsletters?

  • You send relevant emails at the right time

  • It prints you money while you sleep (conversion and retention)

  • You build a relationship with your customers (and potential customers)

  • Collect zero-party data (through self-segmentation, quizzes, etc.)

  • You'll be in a good position come holiday sale season (another conversation, juicy topic)

  • Sending only newsletters/promotional emails is not sustainable. And you'll be leaving money on the table.

The Top 10 flows

Pre-Purchase Flows (before people buy)

  1. Welcome

  2. Site Abandonment

  3. Browse Abandonment

  4. Cart Abandonment (this is not the same as checkout)

  5. Checkout Abandonment

  6. Back in Stock

Post-Purchase Flows (after people buy)

  1. Thank you (no one likes ungrateful brands)

  2. Cross-sell or Upsell

  3. Customer Winback

  4. Sunset (Breakup? Unengaged? Byeeeee)

Next steps:

Check your flows now to see if you have all of these.

In the next ten days, I'm writing a guide for each one of these flows.

*Aren't there more flows than just these 10?

Yes. There are a lot more, depending on your product and strategy.

For example, you'll have a "Replenishment" flow if you're a candle company, not so much if you're selling leather bags with a lifetime warranty.

From experience (and I've made a ton of these), these 10 flows apply to most businesses.
