Welcome to my little corner of the universe.
The day I decided to get tested for ADHD
The day I decided.I always suspected I had ADHD.
My brain was like a highly caffeinated squirreI parkouring off the inside of my skull. I mean, I think more than anything it was just the fact that I thought I had it and, in an act of self-deprecating humor would joke about it. Thinking however, is not knowing, and you can't treat what you don't know. Getting a diagnosis one way or the other would allow me to take the appropriate actions to get my life back.
Taming the squirrel was getting more and more challenging so at 48 years old I finally booked the appointment.
The day it happened.I walked into my appointment and met Sean...
Normally, when you get tested for ADHD, there's this big long questionnaire or assessment that the tester gives you to determine the likelihood you have it. In the first five minutes of talking with Sean, he stopped asking me questions, set aside the assessment, looked me up and down and goes, 'I don't even need to finish this. You present like somebody who has ADHD very clearly. The knee bouncing, the fidgeting, the comments about your brain running a hundred miles a minute.'
"I know," he said, "because I have ADHD too."
What I learned from it.
The day i got that diagnosis was the day that i could finally start to do something about it.
I no longer had to wonder. I knew, which means understanding my condition better, understanding how my brain works, why I obsess over things that interest me or why I procrastinate doing the laundry. Medication became an option as well as other tools to help my Squirrel brain
It was a huge weight off of my shoulders.
