The 3 Signs Your Team Is Becoming Truly Self-Managing
Abhishek Patel

Every team says they want to be self-managing.

Few actually show it.

Here are the 3 real signs I look for.

1. They solve problems before escalating.

Instead of waiting for the Scrum Master, they try options, talk to stakeholders, and remove blockers on their own.

2. They own the sprint goal.

Not “PO’s goal.” Their goal.

They challenge unclear work, adjust scope, and protect the outcome without being asked.

3. They hold each other accountable.

Teammates speak up early:

“Looks stuck — how can we help?”

Accountability becomes horizontal, not vertical.

Self-management isn’t created by ceremonies.

It appears when a team gains the courage and confidence to lead themselves.
