The Hard Truth About Leadership: It’s Not Easy—and That’s Okay
Bill Holbrook

Let’s be honest: leading anyone or anything is hard.

It’s not about inspiring speeches, fancy plans, or big wins. It’s about holding the weight of both outcomes and people. And sometimes? That weight feels heavy.

Parents set boundaries, give consequences, and yes… take away screen time (cue meltdowns). Managers have tough conversations, write people up, or even let someone go—knowing it affects not just one person but the whole team. Friends lean into hard talks, choosing honesty over comfort. Coaches push people beyond their limits, even when it’s not appreciated.

Every leader I know has that "Oh sh*t, this is really hard" moment. Whether you’re leading a home, project, relationship, or billion-dollar company… leadership isn’t for the faint of heart.

So, why does it feel so heavy?

  • Fear of Disappointment: The pressure to not let people down can be crushing.

  • Emotional Fatigue: Carrying your own stress and others’ emotions is draining.

  • Responsibility Overload: Believing every outcome rests solely on you leads to burnout.

  • Conflict Avoidance: Delaying tough conversations only makes them harder.

But here’s the thing… these struggles don’t mean you’re failing. They mean you’re leading.

How do you carry the weight without being crushed?

  • Lean into emotion: Feel it, name it, process it. Don’t bottle it up.

  • Connect with people: Leadership is about people, not just problems.

  • Take care of yourself: Rest isn’t a luxury; it’s a leadership superpower.

  • Keep the wins in sight: Balance the hard with reminders of progress and celebration.

  • Stay anchored to your “why”: The mission keeps you grounded.

Leadership is hard. And that’s okay.

The weight feels heavy because it matters. And so do you.
