I write about my experiences building an apparel brand over the last 12 years.
If you're looking to start an e-commerce company, kids' clothing is a category worth looking at.
There are a few reasons inherent to the category that make kids' clothing unique:
The customer is not the end user.
There are multiple customers buying for the same end user.
Word of mouth marketing is easily leveraged.
Now, let's dive in.
Clothing is the leading category for online shopping.
People buy more clothes online than any other category.
This percentage has shifted a bit during covid as spending more time at home decreased people's desire to update their wardrobe. However, as we move back into 'normal' shopping habits the clothing category should resume as the top online shopping category. Especially kids' clothing.
Young parents spend more on clothes than other age groups.
People ages 35-44 spend more on clothing than any other age group.
This age category of shoppers happen to be the same people that are raising kids and they are already inclined to spend more on clothing. They are shopping for themselves but they're also shopping for their kids.
Grandparents buy kids' clothes too.
Unlike any other category, the customer is not shopping for themselves.
Because grandparents love to buy their grandkids presents like clothes and toys, you can greatly increase your market size by selling to the older generation.
Word of mouth marketing is built in.
Parents talk to each other. A lot. Just peruse Facebook for parenting groups to see what I mean.
Parents talk to each other about what products they like. They also notice when kids are wearing cute clothes. If you're selling unique and interesting clothing for kids your products can also be your advertising. When you have kids you see a lot of other kids which means plenty of opportunity for your brand to be seen by potential customers.
Kids grow quickly = high customer lifetime value.
As kids grow, parents continue to buy clothes from brands that they know and trust.
The hardest (and most expensive) part of running an online business is customer acquisition. With a kids' clothing brand, you have the ability to grow the lifetime value of each customer by selling the same customers products in bigger sizes.
Kids' clothing is a category that shouldn't be overlooked.
These unique attributes make kids' clothing a category that shouldn't be overlooked when considering launching and building and e-commerce company.
