I write about my experiences building an apparel brand over the last 12 years.

Everything you need for a clear and effective strategic plan can fit on a single page.

There are typically two divergent paths when developing a strategic plan for your business: get overwhelmed and make it way too long or get overwhelmed and avoid making it at all. There is a ton of value in having a strategic plan for your business, regardless if the business is new, old, big or small.

The most effective focus plan will be the one you refer to often so you might as well make it easy to read.

1. Core Values

Your core values are the foundation that everything in your business is built on.

These are the guiding principles that will determine what you will and won't do as a business. Keep them clear, concise and try not to write down more than five.

2. Purpose

This is the 'why' for running your business.

It's easy to get distracted by the shiny new idea or opportunity to chase. This will help you from being distracted and keep you focused on what you're meant to do.

3. Three Year Target

You need a target to aim for.

This is where you will be and what it will look like in the not-so-distant future. Put down a target date and the measurables that you will achieve by then; revenue, profit, number of customers, etc. The important thing here is that they are measurable.

4. Annual Goals

What do you need to do this year to put you on track to hit your 3 year target?

Just like the 3 year target, list the measurable goals that you will achieve by the end of the year. Now make a list of the 5-10 priorities that you need to focus on to be able to reach the goals by year end.

5. Quarterly Goals

These are the goals and priorities for the next three months.

Now, you're breaking your measurable annual goals down to a quarterly level. Make sure they are measurable. What are the 5-10 priorities (less is more) that you need to focus on over the next three months to ensure you reach those goals? You will update the quarterly goals at the end of each quarter. Rinse and repeat.

A clear strategy will help you reach your goals.

It's easy to get overwhelmed and distracted when running a business. A simple one page strategic plan is a great tool to help you build momentum and reach your goals.
