Here are 4 common mistakes writers(including myself) make when revising their work.

1. Clinging to Words for Sentimental Reasons

When I started writing my second children's book manuscript, I fell in love with a scene and convinced myself it had to stay, even though it wasn’t furthering the plot.

It’s easy to get attached to a scene or sentence you’ve worked hard on, but if it doesn’t serve the story, it needs to go. Once I cut it, the story flowed, and my character's arc made sense. Every word should earn its place in the narrative.

2. Ignoring Feedback

When you receive feedback, especially on sections you love, it’s tempting to resist making changes. I fell into this trap with a scene in my manuscript, convinced it was great despite feedback that it didn’t work. Don’t defend a passage just because you love it. Letting go can open the door to something even better.

3. Revising Too Soon

Rushing into revisions without a break can cloud your judgment. If you revise too soon, you’re too close to the words to let them go. Now, I write my rough drafts and step away for a few days. I work on other projects which helps me distance myself from the draft and return with more objective perspective.

4. Focusing on Your Ego Instead of the Reader

Holding onto your words can be more about protecting your ego than focusing on your readers. A good story isn't about showing off; it's about delivering something compelling and engaging. Once I cut the scene I was clinging to, my story became 100 times stronger—the flow, character arc, and narrative all made sense. Always prioritize the reader, and don’t sacrifice clarity or pacing for the sake of a line you’re proud of.
