I know I deserve it, I just don't know how to ask for it.
In almost all globally recognized employee exit surveys, it is seen that employees leave organizations when they don't get a sense of recognition, career growth, or feel inadequately paid for their efforts.
Most employees depend on their Managers to initiate career conversations.
In organizations, where career conversations are not structured and appraisals happen once a year- the employee on not getting the expected promotion, finds it better to move out instead of anxiously waiting for another 12 months.
I may have got the promotion if I had asked for it.
Most individuals never initiate promotion conversations with their Managers. Some of the answers I have heard as a reason for this are:
If they really value me, they would think about it on their own.
I don't want to face the embarrassment of not getting one, despite asking.
I don't want to sound needy: my equation with my boss would get bad.
I don't want to look greedy and a stickler for titles.
If I don't get it, it would impact my rating and hence bonus for the year.
They don't have a higher role for me (in the current team/location/unit).
On the other side, reasons Manager give for not promoting a deserving member:
He didn’t ask for it, so I thought it could wait.
He seemed happy with the good salary hike/rating.
It didn’t seem he was really keen on it.
Wasn’t sure if he was eligible in this cycle.
In my experience of managing appraisal and promotion cycles over the years, individuals who seek promotions are much more likely to get promoted than those who may be deserving but have not asked for it.
If you really want it, go for it.
