You’re Correcting the Wrong Problem—And It’s Killing Your Culture
Dr. Dave Maloley

Every business owner eventually hits this wall:
You’re exhausted from fixing problems that won’t stay fixed.

You’re rewriting SOPs.
Offering more feedback.
Trying to “coach” your way through resistance.

And nothing changes.

Because it’s not a performance problem.
It’s a behavior problem.
And those require a different kind of leadership.

Performance = Can’t Do

  • They don’t know the process.

  • The system’s unclear.

  • The training is weak.

✅ You fix it with coaching, reps, and clarity.

Behavior = Won’t Do

  • They roll their eyes.

  • They blame others.

  • They drain the room.

✅ You fix it with standards, boundaries, and consequences.

But here's what most founders get wrong:
They treat behavior like a skill gap.
They try to train disrespect.
They empathize with entitlement.

That’s not leadership. That’s enabling.

What you allow, you teach.
What you tolerate, you endorse.

Your team isn’t confused.
They’re watching.
They know exactly what gets a pass.

Ask This Before Every Correction:

  • Is this a can’t do or a won’t do?

  • Am I leading… or avoiding discomfort?

  • Am I reinforcing the very thing I’m trying to fix?

Because culture isn’t built by what you say.
It’s built by what you stop tolerating.

Want a team that runs without you?
Be the leader who sees the real problem—and has the guts to solve it.

Not later.
Not next quarter.
Now.
