Who's Passionate About Their Job?
Malcom Brown
Passion for the job is used to justify a lot of bad workplace behaviour.
It's used as an excuse for crossing the line.
"Sorry, I'm just passionate about my work."
Often said after upsetting a colleague about some task that needed to be done.
To me, passion can be irrational. It's being zealous, not commercial. It can be fiery, not composed.
Passion for the job manifests as pushing through, jumping queues, imposing on colleagues, ranting, raving, throwing weight around, standing on toes, being belligerent.
Whereas persistence and explanation will get the job done more effectively and in line with commercial goals.
