What ChatGPT has really taught us
Manuel Offidani

When OpenAI launched ChatGPT a few weeks ago, many people were taken aback by its capabilities. Many AI experts have now taken part in a global discussion regarding the nature of AI. According to Yann Le Cun, the verdict is that ChatGPT "is not particularly innovative" and "nothing revolutionary".

Feel free to take any side of the debate, but I can tell you that's not the point.

Years of constructing AI models have taught me that what is truly fascinating about the release of ChatGPT. And it has to do with the current state of AI and how prepared people are to accept it.

It can be summarised in 3 points:

  • We are Living the Foundational Models Rush : Soon after OpenAi published ChatGPT, Google stated that a comparable product is on the way. Indeed, it became evident that numerous teams throughout the world are working on similar projects in spirit: tools that will revolutionise how AI enters our lives. We are currently experiencing the "Foundational Model Rush", i.e. people are rushing to find the Sacred Grail of AI. The bar is lofty

  • People are ready to adopt AI : What surprised me the most was how quickly individuals came up with creative uses for ChatGPT. In recent weeks, "ChatGPT for X" has been trending on Twitter. This demonstrates that humans are far more prepared than we imagined to use AI tools. And this comes with important ethical implications in the design of such tools

  • UI/UX matter more than we thought : if ChatGPT is not that innovative, why has it been so successful? That's mainly due to how easy is for everyone to use it. The UX is lean, the UI is minimal. No learning curve.
People were previously permitted to forgo UX in order to include the power of an AI component in their softwares. This will no longer be the case after ChatGPT: AI models deserve to be released as legitimate digital products.

Brace yourself, the AI age has just started.
