Follow me for web3 tinkering, and occasional learnings on healthy living and feeling our best. Twitter: @mikleens

Web3 first drew me in because I realized there was some serious innovation taking place, and I decided to jump in and learn by writing about it.

As a "newbie", the only exposure you might get to web3 is from the internet. Probably through Twitter, Youtube, and perusing the websites and Discords of various projects.

While there are some fabulous resources out there, the internet can quickly start to feel overwhelming, toxic, and exclusive. If you are just trying to learn, it's easy to get sucked in and get spit out disillusioned.

With 20/20 hindsight, it's obvious what was missing here: real people!

My Conference Experience

While I attended Permissionless (a DeFi conference in Florida) feeling like a weary outsider, the first day shifted my attitude completely.

Instead of reading subversive tweets, I found myself in a room with thousands of smart, passionate people.

Instead of trying to navigate the static of the internet, I was able to listen to industry leaders share their ideas, opinions and hopes. And in my downtime, I met a diverse array of people and learned about cool and interesting projects, even over (free!) drinks.

So if you feel curious but overwhelmed, consider that the missing piece for you might be the people.

Do a google search for an event in your area, or a city you want to travel to, and take the risk. You will learn a lot, and possibly even make some friends.
