Practicing Self Care in Times of Turmoil Impacts More Than Just Yourself
Elena Mikhaylova

My Reiki teacher shared these words with us yesterday, and it really tugged at my heart:

"We need to be taking responsibility as conscious people to promote peace in ourselves with our daily practice, so it can ripple out into the world".

If we can do nothing else in times of turmoil, we owe this one to ourselves, and to the world. If we are able, we need to make the conscious choice to be kind and present.

How can a daily practice promote inner peace?

This will be different for everyone, but every morning I do the two things which make me feel grounded and healthy:

  1. Take a 15 minute walk first thing after waking. This gets my blood flowing, gets me outside, and gets sun in my eyes to promote a healthy circadian rhythm. All of this helps me cultivate a better state of mind. 100% non-negotiable.

  2. 30 minutes of yoga. This promotes health in my body, reminds me to be gentle with myself, gives me an opportunity to be present and meditative. I aim to do this as often as possible, and follow a teacher I like on YouTube.

While these wellness habits serve me, an even bigger reason to do them is that they will serve those around me.

These actions allow me to cultivate a state where I can be healthier and more present for others in my life.

In times of turmoil, fear, and uncertainty (like today) they become even more valuable.

So consider doubling down on the things that make you whole, so you can show up and be your best, kindest, most present self for everyone around you, and so you can ripple that out into the world.
