The Energy mix should not be confused with the Power generation mix (also known as the Electricity mix).
Here is what Energy Mix means
The Energy mix of a country is the combination of different primary energy sources that make up the total supply of a country. Very few, if any, countries in the world use only one primary energy flow to power the entire country. Different energy services tend to use various sources.
For example, transportation in its various forms (cars, trucks, airplanes, ships) almost always use Petroleum products (Gasoline, Diesel etc) for their energy. On the other hand, residential energy use often includes biofuels or natural gas for heating and cooking. Homes often use good amount of electricity as well. This electricity must come from some primary energy sources because Electricity is an Energy Currency, rather than a source.
The energy mix of the country is therefore total sum of all these various sources of energy, including the energy that's imported from other countries.
Here is what Power Generation Mix means
The power generation mix (also known as the electricity mix) is the combination of the various fuels used to generate electricity in a given country. The power generation mix varies from one country to the next, depending on global markets, national policy choices and local fuel production.
Coal is still KING in the Power Generation Mix
Coal is currently still the main source of fuel for power generation Globally, accounting for more than 38% of the mix in 2018. But the gap with natural gas (23.4%) is closing. Crude Oil Fuels are vital for transportation and industry but is rarely used to generate electricity. Hydro is the most widely used renewable (almost 16%), whereas wind (4.8%) and solar (2.2%) are growing steadily. Nuclear energy peaks at just over 10%.
I hope this clarifies the Confusion between Energy Mix and Power Generation Mix :)
