Hiring a B2B climate writer? 5 qualities to look for if you want smooth collaboration, measurable results, and a happy CEO
Rebekah Mays

This year, I worked with 7 different B2B clients in various climate technology niches. And I've been writing for clients for 7 years.

During this time, I've learned the best freelance climate writers have five specific qualities that make them great to work with.

If I were a content manager hiring a writer for 2025, these are the five qualities I'd be looking for.

1. Professionalism

In my view, the most important quality of any contractor is professionalism.

Do they show up to calls on time? Are they polite and respectful? Do they follow through? Do they have good judgment?

You'll make your life infinitely easier by hiring someone who can conduct themselves.

2. Writing chops

Next, look for signs they can write with a mix of clarity, precision, conciseness, and persuasion β€” the qualities necessary for good B2B climate writing.

Reviewing writing samples can be helpful, but the problem here is you don't have much insight into how heavily these samples were edited.

Aside from writing samples, make sure to look at:

  • what they've published on their own marketing channels

  • how they communicate with you

  • how they write proposals

3. Climate experience

Past experience writing about climate topics comes as a third priority in my book.

Climate background, especially in your niche, will make your work infinitely easier. (Because they already know the basics of climate change, decarbonization, sustainability legislation, and the list goes on...)

But in my experience, previous writing about climate topics is not as crucial as those first two qualities.

That's because any good B2B writer who's interested in the topic β€” and willing to work hard β€” can get up to speed eventually. Especially if you can provide them access to subject matter experts.

4. Asset knowledge

Next, you want someone who can write the specific type of asset you need.

Writing great LinkedIn posts is very different than writing in-depth research reports. As a result, many long-form writers don't know how to write engaging short-form content β€” and vice-versa.

Many great B2B writers can adapt to a variety of different styles, but you'll get best results from someone who focuses on the specific type of thing you want them to write.

5. Strategic thinking

Finally, I'd be looking for a writer who doesn't just take orders, but proactively helps you prioritize. In other words, a strategic thinker.

A good strategic writer who understands B2B content marketing is a business asset who will help you capitalize on missed opportunities.

This quality combined with these other four qualities, this kind of climate writer is a serious force in your content team.

And once you find them, you'll never want to let them go.
