If I could go back in time, these are the 7 things I wish I knew about moving to Germany. It would've saved me a lot of time and effort.

1. Finding an Apartment is Tricky

Securing a long-term apartment at a reasonable price is tough, especially if you don’t speak German. Unfurnished apartments are often entirely empty—no kitchen, no lights, sometimes not even toilet seats. Be prepared to start from scratch or spend extra money.

2. Types of Jobs and Contracts

Germany has three employment types: full-time, part-time, and mini jobs. Full-time is 36-40 hours a week, part-time is less than 30, and mini jobs are 10-hour weeks with a maximum pay of 520 Euros. Always ensure you have a signed contract to avoid issues like unpaid work or lack of health insurance.

3. Sundays and Quiet Hours

Sundays are a rest day, and stores are closed. It’s also frowned upon to do noisy housework. Quiet hours are enforced from 8 pm to 7 am on weekdays and all day on Sunday, so plan your activities accordingly.

4. Tap Water and Recycling

Tap water in Germany is safe to drink, and recycling is taken seriously. Different bins for plastics, paper, and organic waste are the norm. You’ll even need to separate glass by color when recycling.

5. Cash is Still King

Although card payments are becoming more common, many places still only accept cash. Coins are essential for public restrooms, so always carry some with you.

6. Public Transportation

Germany offers a robust public transportation system. However, trains are often delayed, so always check the DB Navigator app for updates and alternative routes.

7. Healthcare System

Germany’s healthcare system is great, but finding a doctor can be challenging if clinics are not accepting new patients. It’s mandatory to have health insurance, so make sure you’re covered, especially if you're self-employed.
