Energy efficiency was at one point in the early to mid-twentieth century the greatest achievement of mankind.
Moving from coal and steam to oil and gas produced huge efficiency gains and created power that was more suitable than what was previously accepted as good practice. However, our planet did not benefit from us using any of these fuel sources, in fact they have caused hugely detrimental effects resulting in our climate crisis.
It's obvious that we need to move away from oil and gas towards a system powered by renewable generation sources.
Human progress requires change and now is the time for us to put our planet first and make the necessary changes.
What is promising is that the previous changes in our power system in the UK have been completely life-changing and despite the resulting negative impact on our planet they have created incredible innovations that have carried our society forwards at great speed. We also know that what we are currently doing has irreversible effects if left unchanged, so in essence we have a deadline.
As Leonard Bernstein said "in order to achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time"
The next change in the power system is going to be the most life-defining change of our human existence. A sustainable change.
What is amazing is that we have the ability to generate renewable power.
On top of that, we also have the ability to manage our consumption habits through monitoring electricity and gas usage. So, we have all we need in order to create incredibly efficient energy systems in every building. Where we lack ability is the tools that helps us to optimise these systems and help to drive efficient human behaviours that play in to these systems.
The next great innovation will be the one that effectively meshes human behaviour and technological advances in power systems together.
