A lot of people are canceling their SaaS subscriptions right now.

Specifically: newsletter platforms, as beehiiv adjusted their pricing.

I did the exact opposite this morning.

I upgraded my beehiiv account to the highest plan (Pro, formerly Scale).

Why?

Because saving a few tens or hundreds of dollars misses the real point of running an email list.

If you have even 1,000 subscribers and can't generate enough revenue to cover the platform hosting them, the pricing isn't your core bottleneck.

Either you're using the wrong platform for your needs, or there's a disconnect in your business model.

You don't need to sell ad spots, chase sponsorships, or lock content behind paid subscriptions. But with 1,000 engaged readers, there are dozens of ways to generate revenue—services, digital products, consulting, or backend offers—that easily cover the platform and then some.

I use beehiiv for my newsletters, and it has been one of the best decisions I've made for building something sustainable outside my main work.

If you are serious about building a content business you actually own rather than renting space on someone else's platform, the tool you build on is an asset, not an overhead to panic over.

Cutting software costs won't fix a business model that isn't monetizing. Focus on the model first.
