Can Jason Bourne Help Us Learn Buddhist Wisdom?
Tim Fairweather

How are experiences shape our identity?

“How come I know I can run for 15 minutes at this altitude without it affecting my aim?” - Jason Bourne

Not only is it an awesome movie, but the Treadstone operative can help us to understand the relationship between memory, experience and our true self.

Why our memory of the "I" keeps us trapped:

Just like in the movie "Bourne," our experiences shape our memories and can influence our sense of identity.

However, it's important to remember that our experiences are not the same as our true selves.

Our ego is formed from our memories and can make it difficult to live in the present moment. In contrast, animals like goldfish, who don't have long-term memories, are better at living in the present.

Our memories and ego create an illusion of identity and can trap us in fear, so it's important to try to let go of this attachment to our past experiences.

However, memory is also important because it helps us to learn and develop wisdom. The key is to find a balance between letting go of our ego and using our memories to learn and grow.

One way to do this is to observe our experiences without getting too attached. This allows us to see the world more clearly and find inner peace.

Practising activities like Tai Chi, which involves sharp but relaxed motion, can also help us to connect with our pure essence and let go of our ego.

Ultimately, the goal is to continue to develop unlimitedly and purify our experiences to remain light and free.

Remember, wisdom is like a lotus seed that helps us to grow and find inner peace.

Practical exercises:

  • Observe the sentence, "No ego, no wisdom. Can't use your I to clean your I. Can't have any ego to purify the ego."

  • If you're feeling stuck in a negative mood, try observing life's essence, function, and goal.

  • Practice your Tai Chi or other forms of moving meditation.

  • Remember that wisdom is like a lotus seed that helps us to purify our experiences and find inner peace.
