🔥 The Surprising Synergy of Buddhism and Martial Arts 🔥
Tim Fairweather

🎯 Key Points:

1️⃣ Shared Philosophies

2️⃣ Mental Discipline

3️⃣ Non-violence and Self-defense

1️⃣ Shared Philosophies: Both Buddhism and martial arts help us to develop a strong centre. We can call this our heart. But most people think this means only self-mastery. But the self is never disconnected from the rest of the world. So, the self exists together with the others. In one way, Buddhism helps us to be aware of our internal world. Martial Arts helps us to understand how it impacts the external world. These aren’t separate goals but rather two sides of the same coin.

2️⃣ Mental Discipline: Martial arts focuses on centre development, functional training and discipline. This is our foundation. Then, we can read Buddhist philosophy. Then, we can use it to improve our character through meditation and mindfulness. To change ourselves is very difficult. The focus is on physical, emotional, mental, psychological and spiritual improvement. This makes them work together.

3️⃣ Non-violence and Self-defense: Buddhism is not about non-violence. Instead it teaches karma. If you hurt another, then this must come back. To return another person's attack at them without adding force is called neutral karma. This is the true sign of a kung fu master. One cannot always avoid conflict, but one can develop skills to turn it into peace and kindness. The beautiful lotus grows from the dirty, stinky, muddy swamp. It turns the ugly, into the beautiful.

🌟 In Summary:
Buddhism and martial arts are interconnected. One cannot develop either without the other. This leads us down a path full of fun, training and sharing. Together we develop holistic self-mastery to help ourselves and others.

Thread: Meditation: 3 Ways to Change Our Life Frequency

1/ Everything in life is a frequency, and humans exist in a 6-sense frequency. Meditation can help break the limitations of human frequency and connect to different frequencies. Tai Chi is a frequency that helps with moving meditation.

2/ The Heart Sutra in Buddhism teaches that breaking limitations leads to brightness and wisdom. The wave of intention from the heart creates the Six Realms of Reincarnation and the Pure Land Universe.

3/ Observing Self-Being Meditation involves observing the 3 Eternal Dharma Truths: all forms are constantly changing, there's no individuality, and Nirvana is complete freedom.

4/ The first frequency to practice is to return to one's Pure Essence, which is the original state and free from suffering. Tai Chi helps individuals become aware of their body and is a good frequency for humans.

5/ The first line of the Heart Sutra says ‘brightly aware.’ This brightness comes from breaking our limitations. Wisdom is an ability that can be ...more

Meditation Technique Poem
Tim Fairweather

This poem helps me go into a light and joyful meditation zone.

I hope it can work for you, also!

Inspired by the awesome teachings of Shifu Forever Wisdom-Forest

Meditation, free from having to search for anything.

The heart takes a rest.

Resting is holding nothing. and nothing is holding us.

Life is constantly changing, so the need to find security disappears.

Let it go, Blind negative emotion heart disappears.

Ah, back to our pure essence,

Here, our observing heart naturally appears.

No need to find wisdom.

From pure observation, we can discover all the wisdom.

Every moment can be perfect if we develop perfect wisdom.

Every moment is a chance to awaken if we don't take ourselves so seriously.

Life comes from nothing and disappears back into nothing.

But in the nothing, we can develop everything.

So how wonderful we can develop something from nothing.

Truly, our hearts can feel life again is an illusion.

But an illusion that helps us to learn life is an illusion.

A perfect circle.

Let go of our greedy, selfish heart - A Truly kind heart appears.

Let go of our anger - A truly caring heart appears.

The searching heart, ah let it be - The pure observing heart appears.

Let go of everything so tightly - A free heart appears.

Once all of our blindness disappears, Eternal Wisdom appears.

Om.

The Wisdom of True Pureness
Tim Fairweather

One part I love about Buddhist philosophy is how quickly it can dismantle bad connections. And then replace it without a bright, open space to see life again.

One wisdom I love is called "The Wisdom of True Pureness." from Pure Name Buddha.

Our Essence is Pure

It says when our hearts are at rest, everything becomes calm again, like the quiet surface of the still water.

Even all the relationships with all the things we hold onto and connect to, in our deep calmness and resting without any connection, will become just pure illusion.

There is no relationship between our true life and the illusion world.

This relationship is a trick for us to learn that there is nothing to get.

Just to learn that it is a trick and become wise and pure.

Through learning life, we become wise and pure.

Nature is Pure

A piece of wood or grass is in that deep pureness, has no ego-I.

In fact, the whole universe is in that deep pureness and calmness.

If we can connect to that pureness, we finally feel free.

Then the next step, you can then connect to the whole universe.

There is no dream of searching anymore. The dream represents the illusion of life, so no more dreams of searching. There is no more of our ‘I’ in that illusion world.

Nothing holding any of us and no boundary means pure joy.

Pure intention creates joy.

It purifies all illusions. If our intention is not pure, we will never be joyful.

Spiritual philosophy can take our hearts back to contentment.

Then, beautiful spiritual lights can appear.

The ‘I’ we have in this world is not even here.

Once we observe this, we can go back to our essence and understand pureness.

Grass blowing in the wind is free to move. Not enough water today, they don’t care, whatever it is – it is.

Either way is fine, never have a personal-I involved. There is no consciousness there to judge.

Our body is part of nature's changing, so we should not worry about it. Let it be free to change and follow the natural flow. No worry, no judgement, just to do our best.

The body always changes, but I am always myself. The world is always changing, but my essence is not changing.

The ability behind the tool is never changing.

Buddha says: "It’s amazing, even the grass and the wood all have Buddha’s amazing character and appearing form in it.

This is how the energy can appear as Buddha.

If consciousness is perfect, all the appearing forms will become perfect.

But our consciousness has a lot of pollution, which is why we see many things as imperfect.

So we learn to clean out pollution, back to perfect pureness. From there, we can practice four eternal hearts to reach complete, unlimited perfection.

Essence is perfect and pure, never born, never die.

Essence also has another perfect, perfect to create blindness. Through that blindness, we learn to be awakened, and then we learn wisdom. Through learning that wisdom, we learn four eternal hearts.

So it looks like blindness is not perfect, but truly blindness is perfect. It is the teacher of Buddha.

At one time, Dragon Buddha asks Pure Name Buddha, What is blindness?

"Blindness is the teacher of Buddha, consciousness has the power to purify, but consciousness has the power to create blindness.

When this pureness is lost by blindness and awakened again, it becomes Buddha. So blindness is the necessary teacher. Teacher to help you learn, so you don’t hold the teacher, you don’t hold your blindness. "

See through it, then let all the blindness go.

It’s like you learn what the teacher teaches. You don’t need to keep learning that same thing, and you let it go. It has become your nature already.

So let all the bad things go.

Summary of The Wisdom of True Pureness

  • We discussed the concept of "True Pureness", achieved by letting go of all connections and attachments to the illusionary world.

  • By recognizing that these connections are tricks, one can learn to become wise and pure.

  • This is compared to nature, such as a piece of wood or grass, which exist in deep pureness and calmness, free from ego and judgement.

  • Pure intention creates joy, and that spiritual philosophy can bring contentment to the heart.

  • The physical body is constantly changing, but the essence or consciousness behind it remains unchanged and pure.

  • Blindness is necessary as a teacher to help us learn and reach true pureness.

Discovering the True Value of Life: A Buddhist Perspective"
Tim Fairweather

What is the difference between the true value and fake value?

The value of life, according to Buddhism, is to develop a true heart, also known as the Buddha's heart.

Four qualities characterize this true heart: complete care, complete kindness, complete joy, and complete freedom, all exercised wisely.

This true value of life is in contrast to the fake value, which is rooted in personal desire and the three poison consciousness of greed, hate, and stupidity.

These personal desires bring suffering because they are based on greed, which makes one a slave to material possessions and leads to stress, acquisition, and fear of loss.

True value is understanding that everything is a changing illusion and that one cannot hold onto anything.

This understanding helps to develop wisdom and compassion, as it allows one to let go of personal emotions and suffering.

In contrast, fake value is limited to a narrow, personal view and places importance on temporary things.

True value is the opportunity to develop eternally, while fake value is limited to this life.

True value involves understanding the system of life and developing the four eternal hearts, while fake value involves the development of temporary things based on personal greed and ego.

True value is a sure will to escape illusion-being and reincarnation, while fake value is lost in illusion.

Finally, true value involves following the wisdom of Buddhism, exemplified by the Buddha, in all aspects of one's heart, thoughts, behaviour, attitude, actions, and being. Fake value is egoistical and not following this wisdom.

How Can We Train Timelessness?
Tim Fairweather

Today was a great day. It started badly and was getting worse for more than half of it. But by 5 pm, it had come good at last.

You see, time had disappeared between 25 and 35 minutes of Yoga.

How do I know?

It's funny how we don't know the time has disappeared until after it's gone.

Most of the 'time' we don't care about it.

But inside that moment is a magical skill we can train deeper and deeper.

We go somewhere and, well, then we come back!

But back from where?

The Youtube Yoga video I was watching stopped, and I realised I was no longer thinking about my problems, upcoming stuff, financial and relationship stuff. All gone.

The sounds of my niece and nephew fighting with each other, then stopping, then starting again. All gone.

My body was light again.

My mind? Refreshed from all anxiety and stress.

I began to observe whether this magical elixir that literally takes no time and costs nothing could be trained.

What's fascinating to me is that it is not the AMOUNT of timelessness. One moment is enough.

Can timelessness be trained?

According to the Daoist masters, training harmony inside and outside creates a special zone called 'forget-I'.

In this Forget-I zone, our I begins to disappear and then it is gone.

Yes, it will reform faster than my niece and nephew will demand it's time to swim! But for now, it is gone.

Why is that special?

I tried to watch a Yoga video 3 times today while I babysat them. It's not their fault they are 6 and 11 years old and have unlimited energy; I'm nearly 40. Not quite.

Speaking about age, what is our feeling about time?
One definition of time is how we move in space. And when we move in space, we need an identity to do that called our ego.

Our ego is very busy having to do many things. Our greed non-stop creates things for us to do except do nothing.

Doing nothing. Wu-Wei.

The Daoist masters spent a lot of time discussing this. Wu Wei is not to do nothing, but do, without our regular personal I.

What's that? The one with all the 'I and my' problems.

So one moment when time stops is a magic moment.

All the stress from our ego, identity, space, and time all vanish.

Just in time for Uncle Tim to make more peanut butter sandwiches.

But I was successful. And so will you if you start to practice Wang-Wo; Forget I.

I will continue their research this year - making sure each day has a moment free from time, and will chart my progress.

I would love to hears yours!

Practical Exercises For Learning The Levels of Meditation
Tim Fairweather

This is a follow-up to my previous post about the two levels of meditation.

Here are 4 meditations you can practice anywhere and anytime.

Forget-I Meditation:

  • Find an activity that you enjoy that requires concentration, such as cooking, sports, dance, martial arts, or writing.

  • Practice this activity while letting go of your thoughts and worries and allowing yourself to immerse yourself in the present moment fully.

  • As you do this, you may find that you begin to forget yourself and your problems and experience a deeper level of concentration.

No-I Meditation:

  • Start by sitting in a comfortable position and focusing on your breath.

  • As you breathe in, imagine breathing in harmony and balance; as you breathe out, imagine that you are releasing any tension or negative thoughts.

  • As you focus on your breath, bring awareness to your posture and motion, and make any adjustments necessary to maintain a balanced and comfortable position.

Body Scan Meditation:

  • Focus on each part of your body and release any tension.

  • Remember to relax the face: jaw, eyes, eye sockets, temples, and cheeks all hanging down. Maybe don't do it in public!

  • You can try squeezing first as hard as possible and then very slowly count to 10 as you take the tension from 100% down to zero.

Be Like a Cloud Meditation:

  • Focus on the present moment

  • As sounds and thoughts enter the mind, let them pass through you.

  • Like you are the cloud floating in the sky. Wind or no wind you remain as light as possible.

  • Be carefree.

  • Soften the breathing until even your breathing makes only a subtle sound.

  • Lengthen the time between exhaling and inhaling.

  • Let time stop.

  • When thoughts and sounds and labels enter do not attach any importance to them and they will disappear by themselves.

Equal Heart, Kindness Meditation:

  • Create a beautiful intention towards every life.

  • Smile this feeling into yourself and let it radiate from your body into the space in all directions.

  • Feel the lightness of your smile melt through you.

  • Create a will towards every life, that they may all be free of suffering and pain.

  • Create a deep will towards every life to find happiness and joy.

  • Make this force your being non-stop, radiating out to every life in every city, and country across the planet.

  • Radiate this outwards to every life form on this planet equally.

It’s important to note that these practices take time and patience to master and should be practised regularly to see progress.

We Can Never Find Nirvana Because Nirvana Is Always There
Tim Fairweather

What is our Causation-I, and how can we develop pureness?

In Pure Name Buddha's book, the Vimalakirti Sutra, he speaks about a different way to find happiness and inner peace.

He says if you understand this philosophy 😄 from your heart 💚
You will be free from all suffering 🎊

The heart in Buddhism is not the beating organ but our consciousness, our ability to be aware of each moment.

It is short but so powerful, so I'll share it here.

He says that our heart, or consciousness, creates our identity, our “causation-I“, as an illusion that never ends. Causation because it is connected to everything from outside.
But if A creates B, then A is not B.

So our heart cannot be this illusion.
The causation-I comes from all the others, so it has no true self.

So where is our true self?

It cannot be outside. It cannot be inside. So where is it?

It is nowhere. It is everywhere.

Because our heart is the creator.

So our true heart has no beginning nor end.

Therefore it always remains pure and free.

Like the painter is never the painting.

Summary

So we can never find Nirvana because Nirvana is always there.

I love this philosophy so much. It brings such lightness and joy to my insides.

Of course, we cannot become awakened by one idea only. But it is a start to help us find peace and kind intention toward ourselves and others.

Any moment you can connect to awakened wisdom is an awakened moment.

Many awakened moments become an awakened life.

How wonderful that we can all develop towards this beautiful direction right now in the present moment! 😊💚🙏🐉☯️☸️

Summary of Our Hearts

  • Our consciousness is an incredible and eternal force that cannot be created or destroyed.

  • Blind action can lead to reincarnation, but we can break this cycle by observing eternal wisdom and understanding ourselves.

  • The potential and purity of the heart are the same for all people, but the level of development can vary.

  • Each person can create positivity or blindness through their heart's two gates - one leading to wisdom and compassion and the other to ignorance.

  • To reach our full potential, we must strive towards becoming one of the four eternal hearts - wisdom, compassion, joy, and equanimity.

  • By guiding our blindness towards these eternal hearts, we can overcome ignorance and cultivate a deeper understanding of the world.

  • The heart is an eternal and indestructible force within each of us. By understanding ourselves and striving towards enlightenment, we can overcome the cycle of reincarnation and tap into the boundless potential of the four eternal hearts.

Each Heart Is Incredible Because It is Not Creatable
Tim Fairweather

How can we choose Brightness over Blindness?

Our own consciousness is an incredible and eternal force.

It cannot be created nor destroyed but exists on its own. Through the process of reincarnation, the connections we have with others may change, but the heart itself remains the same.

Blind action, or taking actions without fully understanding the consequences, leads us to reincarnation.

But, according to Buddha, by observing eternal wisdom and truly understanding ourselves, we can avoid this cycle and reach enlightenment, or "Por Ler Bour Ler (Heart Sutra)."

The potential and pureness of the heart are the same for all people, but the level of development can vary, leading to different appearances and outcomes.

Each person has the power to create brightness or blindness.

Because our hearts have unlimited force, and they remain free, we always have two directions or gates: One leading to wisdom and compassion and the other to ignorance. Brightness vs Blindness.

How to choose blindness? Change nothing. In a world of blind causation, we can just go with the flow!

How to choose brightness? To reach our true potential by choosing any one of the 4 Eternal Hearts:

The 4 Eternal hearts are:

  • kindness without ego,

  • Care without negative personal emotion

  • Joy without stupidity

  • Freedom from greed

By guiding our blindness towards these eternal hearts, we can overcome ignorance and cultivate a deeper understanding of the world around us.

In summary, the heart is an eternal and indestructible force that exists within each and every one of us. By understanding ourselves and striving towards enlightenment, we can overcome the cycle of reincarnation and tap into the boundless potential of the four eternal hearts.

Can Jason Bourne Help Us Learn Buddhist Wisdom?
Tim Fairweather

How are experiences shape our identity?

“How come I know I can run for 15 minutes at this altitude without it affecting my aim?” - Jason Bourne

Not only is it an awesome movie, but the Treadstone operative can help us to understand the relationship between memory, experience and our true self.

Why our memory of the "I" keeps us trapped:

Just like in the movie "Bourne," our experiences shape our memories and can influence our sense of identity.

However, it's important to remember that our experiences are not the same as our true selves.

Our ego is formed from our memories and can make it difficult to live in the present moment. In contrast, animals like goldfish, who don't have long-term memories, are better at living in the present.

Our memories and ego create an illusion of identity and can trap us in fear, so it's important to try to let go of this attachment to our past experiences.

However, memory is also important because it helps us to learn and develop wisdom. The key is to find a balance between letting go of our ego and using our memories to learn and grow.

One way to do this is to observe our experiences without getting too attached. This allows us to see the world more clearly and find inner peace.

Practising activities like Tai Chi, which involves sharp but relaxed motion, can also help us to connect with our pure essence and let go of our ego.

Ultimately, the goal is to continue to develop unlimitedly and purify our experiences to remain light and free.

Remember, wisdom is like a lotus seed that helps us to grow and find inner peace.

Practical exercises:

  • Observe the sentence, "No ego, no wisdom. Can't use your I to clean your I. Can't have any ego to purify the ego."

  • If you're feeling stuck in a negative mood, try observing life's essence, function, and goal.

  • Practice your Tai Chi or other forms of moving meditation.

  • Remember that wisdom is like a lotus seed that helps us to purify our experiences and find inner peace.
