What is an Atomic Essay, and how do I write one?

An Atomic Essay is a short essay of up to 400 words, about one idea, published as a single shareable image. The format comes from Ship 30 for 30, the writing course by Dickie Bush and Nicolas Cole, the founders of Typeshare. Typeshare has an Atomic Essay editor that lays your essay out as an image and publishes it to X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, Substack Notes and your Typeshare profile.

What makes an essay "atomic"?

One idea, made as small and complete as it can be: a title and a short essay, 400 words or fewer, that fits on one image a reader can take in at a glance. Writing one every day is the habit Ship 30 for 30 is built on.

How do I write an Atomic Essay in Typeshare?

  1. On the Write page, click Atomic Essay.
  2. Write your headline and essay. The count above the essay shows how many of your 400 words you've used.
  3. Click the palette icon at the top right to open Theme and change the look.
  4. Click Publish, pick where it goes, and click Publish Now or Schedule.

Why are Atomic Essays capped at 400 words?

So the essay fits on one image and stays about one idea. At the cap, Typeshare offers to turn the essay into a Long Form piece (which can also go out as an X Article), with no word limit and all your writing kept.

Where can I publish an Atomic Essay?

X, LinkedIn, Threads, Bluesky, Substack (as a Note, with an optional caption) and your public Typeshare profile. You can also export it as PNG, JPEG or PDF from the ··· menu.

Are there Atomic Essay templates?

Yes. The Templates library has Atomic Essay outlines, alongside templates for posts, threads and LinkedIn posts. Each gives you a proven structure with blanks to fill in.

Can I add images to an Atomic Essay?

Yes. You can add photos to an Atomic Essay, and links in the post text that goes with it.

Does my writing streak count Atomic Essays?

Yes. Your public profile shows your current writing streak and how many posts you've published, which is how many Ship 30 writers keep their daily habit going (see How do I build a daily writing habit?).
