How do I hire an agent?
- In the left sidebar, click Marketplace, then the Agents tab. Or click the + next to Your Agents and choose Hire an agent. On a phone, tap the + at the top of the home screen and choose Hire an agent.
- Browse Featured, search with Search agents, or filter by Publishing, Coaching or Design.
- Click Hire next to the agent.
You are taken to the agent's chat. Publishing agents (X Agent, LinkedIn Agent, Threads Agent, Substack Agent) start with a short setup screen. The Designer and AI Cole start straight in their chat.
An agent you already hired shows Hired or Open instead of Hire. Agents marked Soon or Coming soon can't be hired yet.
Why can't I hire an agent?
- "Agents are part of All-Access. Upgrade to use them." You are on the Basic plan, which doesn't include agents. Upgrade to All-Access from Settings, Billing.
- "An active Typeshare plan is required. Choose a plan to continue." You don't have an active plan. Choose one from Settings, Billing.
- "That agent is already hired." You can hire each agent once. Open it from Your Agents in the sidebar.
- "Could not hire the agent." Something went wrong. Try again in a moment.
See the billing help for plans.
What happens when I set up a publishing agent?
After you hire the X Agent, LinkedIn Agent, Threads Agent or Substack Agent, its chat shows a setup screen with four steps. The agent's side panel unlocks once setup is done.
- Connect your account: click Connect X, Connect LinkedIn, Connect Threads or Connect Substack. If an account is already linked to Typeshare, you can click Yes, use this account, or Not this account / Use a different account to switch. Your past X, LinkedIn and Substack posts are imported into your Digital Brain when you click Yes, use this account; past Threads posts are not imported yet. For Substack, the step also lists your publications (logo, name and address): newsletters can go out on them, and the posts you wrote on them are imported.
- How often do you want to post?: pick a schedule for your queue (see "What posting schedules can I choose?"), then Continue.
- Do you want to approve my posts, or should I publish them for you?: pick Pilot or Autopilot. Autopilot asks you to tick "I understand that on Autopilot posts publish to my account without my review."
- Last thing: should I fill your queue every week?: pick Weekly routine (Sundays at 6 PM the agent plans your week and fills your queue) or Only when I ask (nothing runs on its own). Click Finish setup.
You see "You're all set" and a Start chatting button. Nothing is written straight away: the agent writes when you ask it, or when the weekly routine runs.
How do I connect Substack to the Substack Agent?
Substack has no sign-in for apps, so Typeshare connects through the Typeshare Connector browser extension. You need a computer with Chrome (Edge, Brave and Arc also work) for this step only.
- Step 1 of 3: add the Typeshare Connector: click Get the extension and add it to your browser.
- Step 2 of 3: log in to Substack: click Log in to Substack and log in in the same browser.
- Step 3 of 3: connecting to Typeshare: Typeshare links your Substack account. This can take up to half a minute.
When you see "Connected as @yourhandle", click Continue.
If you see "Connecting Substack needs a computer" or "Connecting Substack needs Chrome", open the page on a computer in Chrome. Copy link to this page helps you move it there.
If you see "You're not logged in to Substack right now.", log in to Substack in the same browser and click I'm logged in. If you see "That didn't connect.", click Try again.
What does "Your LinkedIn account isn't connected anymore" mean when I finish setup?
The account you connected in step 1 was disconnected before you clicked Finish setup (or Start on the routine card), so the agent can't start yet. The message names your platform, for example "Your LinkedIn account isn't connected anymore. Connect it again to start." Setup takes you back to the first step: click Connect LinkedIn (or Yes, use this account if it shows your account), then go through the steps again. Your schedule and mode are kept.
If you see "Your LinkedIn account's sign-in has expired. Connect LinkedIn again to start.", LinkedIn's sign-in ran out (it lasts about 60 days). Connect it again the same way.
You may also see "Pick how often you want to post before starting." or "Pick whether you approve posts first (Pilot) or they publish on their own (Autopilot) before starting." Setup takes you back to that step: pick an option and continue.
If it keeps happening after you connect again, send a note from Help & feedback.
What is the difference between Pilot and Autopilot?
Every publishing agent works in one of two modes:
- Pilot (Recommended): "Approve each post before it publishes. Good for the first weeks." Nothing goes out until you approve it. Ask for posts and the agent drafts them straight away; it only shows you a plan to approve first in the weekly plan routine, or when you ask for a plan.
- Autopilot: "Everything is approved by default: posts go into the queue and publish on schedule. You can still edit or pull any of them."
In Pilot, posts the agent writes wait as "Needs your review" and don't take a queue slot until you approve them. In Autopilot, each new post takes the next open slot in your queue right away.
How do I switch an agent between Pilot and Autopilot?
- Open the agent's chat and click its name at the top to open the side panel.
- On the Info tab, find Mode.
- Choose Pilot or Autopilot.
The change applies to the next posts the agent writes. The chat shows a line such as "Mode set to Autopilot".
Can I stop an agent from adding its own words?
Yes. Open the agent's Info tab and set Wording:
- Can adapt (the default): the agent rephrases, combines and adds connecting words to your ideas.
- My words only: every sentence in a post is one you wrote. The agent can mix, match, cut, reorder and format your sentences, and tweak a word so they fit together, but it never adds a sentence of its own (no AI-written hooks, transitions or takeaways).
When you change it, the chat shows a line such as "Wording set to My words only".
My words only is an instruction to the agent, not a hard filter, so check posts in Review. Posts you write yourself and hand to the agent are posted as you wrote them.
To see which words in a post are yours, turn on Sources in the post's Edit or Review window.
How many of an agent's posts get images or videos?
About half, by default. Publishing agents (X, LinkedIn, Threads and Substack Notes) pair that share of their posts with a photo or video from your Media library, starting with the posts that describe something a picture can show.
To change it:
- Open the agent's side panel (click its name at the top of its chat).
- On the Info tab, find Media on posts.
- Choose None, 25% of posts, 50% of posts (the default), 75% of posts or Every post.
The agent never attaches a picture that doesn't fit just to reach the share. When a post should have media and nothing in your library fits, it goes out as text and says which picture it wanted (see "Why is the agent's icon next to the image button on a post?" in the help on reviewing agent posts). Agents never have the Designer make pictures for their posts on their own; you can ask for one on any post with Make a visual.
What is a CTA and when should I use one?
A CTA (call to action) is your own line and link, posted word for word, that sends readers to your newsletter, course or offer. On X and Threads it's a reply under your post and on Substack a reply Note under your Note, posted after its delay once the post has its minimum likes. On LinkedIn it's the last line of the post. Hover the ⓘ next to CTA in the agent's CTAs tab or the editor's CTA window for a quick reminder.
Use one when the post leads naturally to it (a post on writing habits, then your writing course), and set minimum likes so it only goes under posts readers respond to. Skip it on personal or timely posts, or ones that already ask for something. Each post gets one CTA at most, and X allows up to 30 CTA replies a month.
How do I add a CTA (call to action) to an agent's posts?
A CTA is your own line and link, for example "Learn to write online in 30 days: https://www.startwritingonline.com". The X, LinkedIn, Threads and Substack Notes agents add it to the posts they write, word for word (posts you write and queue yourself never get one):
- X and Threads: posted as a reply under the post.
- Substack Notes: posted as a reply Note under the Note.
- LinkedIn: added as the last line of the post.
To add one:
- Open the agent's side panel (click its name at the top of its chat) and go to the CTAs tab.
- Click Add CTA and write it exactly as it should appear, link included.
- On X and Substack, set when the reply goes out with the clock chip (from Right away to 24 hours after; 3 hours after is the default), and optionally the likes it needs first with the heart chip (Any likes means no minimum).
- Click Save CTA.
You can also ask the agent in chat, for example "Reply to my posts with a link to my course 3 hours after they go out." The agent adds it to the same list, and only changes the list when you ask.
CTAs belong to the platform, not the agent: the list is the same one you pick from on the Write page, and it stays if you remove the agent.
How do I choose how many posts get a CTA?
At the top of the agent's CTAs tab, set CTA frequency: Off, 25% of posts, 50% of posts (the default), 75% of posts or Every post. It's one setting for the agent, not for each CTA. CTAs are spread evenly across the agent's posts: at 50% of posts every other post gets one, at 25% of posts every fourth. Typeshare uses the CTA that fits each post best. If you ask the agent for a CTA on a particular post, that post gets one whatever the frequency.
How does an agent choose which CTA to use?
Each post gets at most one CTA, and each CTA keeps its own timing. When the post publishes:
- Your CTA frequency decides whether the post gets one, spread evenly over the agent's recent posts (at 50%, every other post).
- If you have several CTAs, the one that fits the post best (its topic or offer) is used. For example, a post about landing clients gets your client-focused CTA, a post about writing habits gets your course.
- If none fits better than the others, the one that hasn't been used for longest goes.
Edits apply to posts published from then on.
When you review or edit an agent's post, a card under it shows the CTA it will get as the reply it becomes, for example "Want to build a writing habit…" with "Replies 3 hours after it posts" (on LinkedIn, "Added as the last line of the post"). It's the CTA that would be used if the post went out now; CTAs are picked when the post publishes, so a change to your CTAs before then can change it. Posts with no card won't get a CTA.
To change it, click Change on the card and pick another saved CTA (or edit one). Click × to send the post without a CTA. On X, a post can show a card and still go without one if the monthly limit is used by the time it publishes.
Saved CTAs show as one line each. To change one, click it (or choose Edit in its ⋯ menu), make your changes, then click Done.
To pause a CTA without deleting it, open its ⋯ menu and choose Pause (Resume turns it back on). Delete is in the same menu. Each CTA shows how many posts it has been used on.
Why didn't my CTA reply go out?
- Minimum likes not reached: Typeshare checks the post's likes when the reply is due and then every hour, for up to 24 hours after posting. If the post never reaches the minimum, that post gets no CTA.
- X monthly limit: up to 30 CTA replies a month go out on X. The CTAs tab shows how many you've used ("12 of 30 CTA replies used this month on X"). At the limit it says "You've used this month's 30 CTA replies on X": posts still go out as usual, just without a CTA reply, until the first of next month. To raise the limit, click Contact support there. LinkedIn and Substack have no limit.
- Too long for LinkedIn: if the post plus the CTA would be over LinkedIn's 3,000 characters, the CTA is left off that post.
- Not picked: with a CTA frequency under Every post, some posts go out without a CTA on purpose (at 50%, every other post).
- Posted before the CTA existed: posts that went out before you saved a CTA, or from an agent you've since removed, don't get one.
- Disconnected account: the reply needs the same connection as the post. Reconnect the account in Settings.
What posting schedules can I choose?
The schedule (your queue) is the days and times posts go out. Times are in your time zone and vary by a few minutes each day.
X Agent, Threads Agent and Substack Agent
- Beginner: weekdays, morning (8 AM). 5 posts a week.
- Pro: every day, morning and evening (8 AM, 8 PM). 14 posts a week.
- Expert: every day, morning, midday and evening (8 AM, 12 PM, 8 PM). 21 posts a week.
LinkedIn Agent
- Beginner: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, morning (8 AM). 3 posts a week.
- Standard: every day, morning (8 AM). 7 posts a week.
- Push: every day, morning and afternoon (8 AM, 4 PM). 14 posts a week.
You can also make a custom schedule (see "How do I make a custom posting schedule for an agent?").
How do I change an agent's posting schedule?
- Open the agent's side panel (click its name at the top of its chat).
- On the Info tab, find Queue ("Which days it posts, and at what times.").
- Pick a preset, or Custom… to set your own days and times.
The schedule is shared with posts you queue yourself from Write for the same platform. A change affects future slots only. You can also manage queues from Settings, Writing, Publishing queues, Manage queues.
How do I make a custom posting schedule for an agent?
- Open the agent's side panel and, on the Info tab, open Queue.
- Choose Custom….
- Give it a Name (for example "Weekday mornings").
- Click Add time for each posting time, and tick the days each time applies to.
- Click Create queue (or Save queue when editing).
What is a routine?
A routine is a message the agent receives on a schedule, or when you publish a post, as if you typed it, and the agent does what it says.
Publishing agents come with one routine, the weekly plan: "Plan the week and fill my queue 10 days ahead." It runs Sundays at 6 PM if you chose Weekly routine during setup.
Routines are listed on the Info tab of the agent's side panel under Routines, with when each runs next, or "paused".
How do I create or edit a routine?
- Open the agent's side panel and go to the Info tab.
- Under Routines, click + (or Create Routine if there are none), or click a routine to edit it.
- Give it a name, then set its properties: Status (Active or Paused), Trigger (On a schedule, with Days and Time, or When I publish, with Formats: Long Form, Short Form, LinkedIn Post, Atomic Essay, Deck). Write the message to the agent below them.
- There is no Save button: changes save on their own. A new routine is created once it has a message.
To run a routine right away, open it, click ⋯ at the top right, then Run now (Run for a post… on a routine that runs when you publish, then pick the post). You see "Sent to the agent. Watch the chat."
To delete a routine, open it, click ⋯, then Delete routine. The agent stops receiving it.
You can also ask the agent in chat: "every Monday at 9, plan my week" or "whenever I publish a newsletter, pull 5 quote tweets from it". It sets the routine up, and it can change, pause or delete its routines when you ask.
How do routines that run when I publish work?
Pick When I publish for a routine and the formats it runs on. When you publish a post in one of those formats from Typeshare (the editor, a scheduled post, or an agent), the routine runs about 2 minutes later, once the post is out everywhere, with the post attached: the agent reads it and does what the message says, for example "Pull 7 lines from it as quote tweets, one a day."
- While it waits, the chat shows "“Routine name” runs at 3:12 PM for “Post title”", and the routine says when it runs.
- It runs once per post: publishing the same post to more platforms, or re-publishing an edit, does not run it again.
- Posts an agent makes in a routine run never start another routine.
- It only runs for posts you publish while it's on: it never goes back for posts published before you made it or while it was paused.
- Convert the post back to a draft (or delete it) before the routine runs and the run is called off. The chat says "“Routine name” won’t run for “Post title”: it’s a draft again", and the routine waits for your next publish. Publishing that post again starts it again.
- To run it yourself, open the routine, click ⋯, Run for a post…, then pick one of your published posts in its formats (search by title or words).
- In Pilot, what it makes waits for your review like any other post.
How do I give an agent one of my posts?
In the chat with an agent, type @ and a few words from the post. A menu lists your published posts; pick one and it attaches to your message as a small card. The agent reads the whole post, for example "@Why I write turn this into 5 quote tweets". A routine that runs when you publish attaches the post the same way.
How do I pause an agent?
There is no pause button for a whole agent. To stop it from working on its own, pause its routines:
- Open the agent's side panel, Info tab, Routines.
- Open the routine and switch it from Active to Paused.
- Click Save. (The switch only takes effect when you save.)
With its routines paused, the agent only works when you message it. Posts already scheduled in its queue still publish. To stop those too, remove them from the Queue tab (see the reviewing help), or switch the agent to Pilot so new posts wait for your approval.
How do I disconnect an agent's account?
- Open the agent's side panel, Info tab.
- In the connected account row, click Revoke.
- Confirm "Disconnect {handle} from this space?".
Publishing stops until you reconnect. The agent's chat shows a reconnect card where you can reconnect the same account or use a different one.
How do I rename an agent?
- Open the agent's side panel and click the gear icon (Agent settings).
- Change the Name (and if you like the Colour or Shape).
- Click Save.
How do I delete (fire) an agent?
On a computer, right-click the agent in the sidebar and choose Delete agent. Or, on any device:
- Open the agent's side panel and click the gear icon (Agent settings).
- At the bottom, click Delete agent.
- Confirm Delete agent.
Deleting permanently removes the agent, its chats, routines, saved memories, and unpublished queue (drafts, posts waiting for review and scheduled posts). Published posts stay on your profile and in your Digital Brain.
This can't be undone, but you can hire the agent again from the Marketplace and set it up from scratch.
Why didn't my routine run after I converted the post to a draft?
A routine that runs when you publish only works from published posts. If the post goes back to a draft (or is deleted) before the routine runs, the run is called off and the chat says "“Routine name” won’t run for “Post title”: it’s a draft again". Publish the post again to start it.
